Helping Raise Awareness

There has been much controversy over the latest facebook challenge.  What you are suppose to do is dump a bucket of ice cold water over your head and then challenge three other of your friends to do this to raise awareness for ALS (Lou Gehrigs Disease).  In the past two weeks, donations are up $3 MILLION dollars!  The power of social media and public awareness at its best!  It has been argued that many are only doing the challenge and not donating to the cause.  The challenge states “if you DO NOT do the challenge you must donate $100 to the cause”.  So, by using peoples vanity and the human need to be recognized, social media is not only raising awareness by having people check on the ALS foundation they never heard about, but also raising money for a worthy cause.  There is NO HARM that can come from this challenge, only good!  Here is a link to the ALS foundation page concerning this challenge!

I was recently nominated for this challenge and if any one knows me, I do not back down from a challenge.  I decided to tweak this just a bit and up the stakes.  In light of Robin Williams recent death by suicide, I felt it was important to help spread awareness on suicide prevention  and mental illness. While many of you many question if this methodology works, it must.  By the fact that you are thinking about the issue for even just a slight second, it proves, that thought is being given and awareness raised.

Suicide Prevention and mental illness awareness is a much needed discussion to be having.   The American Foundation For Suicde Prevention states that n the United States, a person dies by suicide every 13.7 minutes claiming more than 38,000 lives each year (AFSP, 2014). In order to spread awareness for suicide prevention, we honor the late Robin Williams with the iconic Mrs Doubtfire Face.

I have done both challenges and will donate to ALS and a charity of my choice which is The Compassionate Friends.  The compassionate friends helps find families find support, compassion and hops after the death of a child, grandchild or sibling at any age from any loss.

Below is my video for both charities and I encourage you to become involved however you see fit!
